ABOUT MIKE
Thoughts. Experiences. Inspiration.
Michael Bricker has spent more than 15 years building animal welfare organizations that work, not just on paper, but in the communities they serve.
He currently leads Animal Care and Protective Services in Jacksonville, Florida, overseeing a team of 70 employees and the care of more than 8,000 animals each year. But the work that defines his career is less about the numbers and more about what it took to get there: building foster networks from the ground up, developing volunteer programs that give communities real ownership over animal welfare, and using marketing and social media as genuine outreach tools rather than afterthoughts. These are programs that outlast any one leader because they are woven into how an organization operates day to day.
What sets Michael apart is the breadth of environments he has led in. He has run private nonprofits, municipal shelters, and nonprofit organizations operating under municipal contracts. Each model comes with its own pressures, politics, and constraints, and he has navigated all of them. That range gives him a perspective that most shelter leaders simply do not have.
He has worked directly with some of the most recognized organizations in the field, including Best Friends Animal Society and Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE). That experience sharpened his understanding of what meaningful reform actually requires at both the organizational and community level, and it is the foundation he brings to every shelter he works with.
He has spoken at regional and national conferences, consulted with shelters and individuals across the country, and engaged in the broader national conversation about where animal welfare is headed and what it takes to get there.
When he is not at the shelter, he is at home with his family, which includes his four dogs and two cats.
